Marcel Sabitzer led Austria to a thrilling 3-2 win over the Netherlands on Tuesday, helping them finish top in their Euro 2024 group.

Austria pulled off a stunning upset against the Netherlands to secure top spot in Group D ahead of France. Marcel Sabitzer was the hero for Ralf Rangnick’s side, as he scored an 80th minute winner to help them claim the three points at the Olympiastadion.

Fans were treated to a captivating Group D finale, as the Netherlands and Austria squared off with top spot on the line. And in the end, it was Austria’s high intensity, incredible cohesion, and exhilarating attacking football that helped them get the better of the Netherlands.

Donyell Malen was given a surprise opportunity in the starting XI by Ronald Koeman, but the Borussia Dortmund forward had a nightmare start to the game as he inadvertently put the ball into his own net to give Austria the lead in the sixth minute.

Cody Gakpo led the Netherlands’ response and equalised soon after the start of the second-half. But Werder Bremen’s Romano Schmid restored Austria’s lead 12 minutes later.

Memphis Depay then brought the Netherlands back on level terms in the 75th minute, but the Austria captain stepped up and called game soon after. Sabitzer got on the end of Christoph Baumgartner’s pass and buried the ball home with a sublime finish.

The win helped Austria secure their place in the Euro 2024 round of 16, where a match against Turkey or Czech Republic awaits them. France finished second in Group D following their 1-1 draw against Poland, while the Netherlands managed to secure qualification to the knockout stage as one of the top four third placed teams.
