Mats Hummels linked with shock move to Bayer Leverkusen

Bayer Leverkusen are reportedly considering a shock move for Mats Hummels, who is officially a free agent after leaving Borussia Dortmund at the end of last season.
Mats Hummels is available on a free transfer and has been linked with a move to Italy in recent weeks, with the likes of AC Milan, Juventus, and AS Roma in the race for his signature. According to Kicker, the veteran centre-back is also attracting the interest of Bayer Leverkusen.
The reigning Bundesliga champions are considering Hummels as a potential replacement for Jonathan Tah, who is increasingly likely to join Bayern Munich this summer.
Hummels, who has spent his entire club career playing in the German Bundesliga, checks a lot of the boxes for Bayer Leverkusen. His leadership and experience could make him an excellent addition to the Leverkusen squad as they look to successfully defend their Bundesliga title next season.
However, the magazine adds that there are said to be concerns at the club over his lack of pace. Xabi Alonso's side like to play attack-minded football and defend high up the pitch, something they did to great effect last season.
Borussia Dortmund masked Hummels' lack of pace last season by adopting a more pragmatic style of play and defending slightly deeper. The 35 year old had a season to remember, as he put in defensive performances of the highest quality and led the Black and Yellows to the Champions League final.
Mats Hummels will be mulling over his plans in the coming days, and it will be interesting to see where he ends up next season.
