Former Borussia Dortmund striker Niclas Füllkrug has given his reasons for joining West Ham United this summer.

Niclas Füllkrug left Borussia Dortmund this summer, joining West Ham United on a four year contract. The move came as a bit of a surprise, as BVB were planning for him to be an important part of the squad. The striker has now revealed his reasons for leaving the Black and Yellows, and has admitted that the signing of Serhou Guirassy played its part.

"Not the greatest vote of confidence" - Niclas Füllkrug explains Borussia Dortmund exit

During a press conference while on Germany duty, Füllkrug said: "There are various reasons why I started thinking about a transfer in the first place. A transfer like that which BVB made [signing Guirassy], is not the greatest vote of confidence for me."

Füllkrug joined Borussia Dortmund in 2023 and was the club’s first-choice striker during his only season with the club. But earlier this summer, the BVB bosses decided to sign Guirassy from VfB Stuttgart on the back of his 30-goal campaign.

The arrival of Guirassy prompted Füllkrug to look for a new club, and he immediately felt an "incredible amount of appreciation" at the English Premier League club. "I felt a incredible amount appreciation there [at West Ham]. Many circumstances spoke in favor of a new path. The club, the coach, and the manager really wanted to sign me," Füllkrug added.

During his time at Borussia Dortmund, Niclas Füllkrug scored 15 goals and assisted a further ten in 43 appearances across all competitions. He has yet to open his goalscoring account for West Ham in four appearances for the club.
