Mats Hummels could leave Borussia Dortmund and even call time on his playing career when his contract with the club expires at the end of the season.

With just over three months left on his current contract with Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels is weighing up his future beyond the end of the season. The veteran centre-back has continued to roll back the years with some of his performances this season, especially in the UEFA Champions League. But BILD are claiming that Hummels could well be set for a BVB exit in the summer.

In fact, according to the tabloid, the likelihood at the moment is that Hummels will hang up his boots at the end of the season. The main reason for this is that the 35 year old wants to retire while playing at the top level. And he also wants to spend more time with his son in the future.

Hummels has been limited to a back-up role at Borussia Dortmund in recent months, with Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle seemingly ahead of him in the pecking order. It was reported that BVB were keen to offer him a new one year contract. But now it appears that the 2014 World Cup winner will be leaving the club in the summer.

Mats Hummels' potential exit would force Borussia Dortmund to enter the transfer market for a new centre-back in the summer. The Black and Yellows have been linked with the likes of Armel Bella-Kotchap and Dean Huijsen. BVB U-19s defender Filipo Mané is also viewed as the potential long-term successor to Hummels.
