Borussia Dortmund are said to be considering offering Matthias Sammer a bigger say in the club's squad planning, and discussions over a new role for him are taking place.

A crucial summer lies in store for Borussia Dortmund, and the club's big reshuffle in management personnel is taking shape. Sven Mislintat is set to make a return to the Black and Yellows as part of this shake-up, and Matthias Sammer could also be given an even more influential role next season.

This is being reported by Kicker and Sky Sport, with the latter claiming that the idea is for Sammer to work closely with Mislintat and play an even more significant part in the club's transfer decisions. However, he will not be the direct replacement for Hans-Joachim Watzke, who will not have a say in sporting matters at the club beyond the end of the season.

Sammer, who won the Bundesliga title and the UEFA Champions League with Borussia Dortmund as a player and also led the club to the Bundesliga title as a head coach, returned to the club as an external advisor in 2018. He has been playing an influential role in squad planning and sporting decisions ever since.

The plan is for Borussia Dortmund's new hierarchy to be finalized this month, with Watzke keen to give those in charge enough time to plan for the summer transfer window. The future of current sporting director Sebastian Kehl remains uncertain, with Sky Sport reporting there are many indications that he will not be taking over from Watzke.
