Serhou Guirassy trained with his Borussia Dortmund teammates for the first time on Tuesday as he stepped up his comeback bid after a long injury spell.

Borussia Dortmund received a big boost on Tuesday afternoon as Serhou Guirassy was able to take part in some parts of team training. The striker was forced to miss the entire pre-season due to an injury he suffered while on international duty in June. He will now look to continue his progress and make his long-awaited BVB debut after the international break.

Serhou Guirassy takes next step on comeback trail

Guirassy joined Borussia Dortmund from VfB Stuttgart in July. But the transfer was put into doubt for a few days due to a knee injury that he had suffered while playing for the Guinea national team a few weeks prior. Ultimately, the €18.5 million went through and the 28 year old has been working on his comeback since.

Nuri Sahin will hope to have Guirassy fit and ready to lead the Borussia Dortmund attack after the international break. The former FC Köln striker scored 30 goals in just 30 appearances for VfB Stuttgart last season. The Black and Yellows beat out competition from a number of big clubs to sign him.

BVB CEO Lars Ricken said on Monday that he expects Guirassy to be fully fit before long (via BILD). "He is right on schedule. We are taking our time. We signed a long-term contract with him. He is doing his rehab extremely conscientiously and professionally. We assume that he will not only be back on the pitch in September, but also playing.”

A home game against FC Heidenheim will be Borussia Dortmund's first game after the international break. A trip to Guirassy's former club VfB Stuttgart then awaits BVB on matchday four of the Bundesliga season.

Serhou Guirassy is expected to be Borussia Dortmund's first-choice striker this season, and could partner fellow new signing Maximilian Beier at the front of the attack. Beier has come off the bench in both of BVB's competitive games so far, but could make his first start for the club this weekend against Werder Bremen.
