The 2026 FIFA World Cup campaign ended on Sunday with Spain seeing off holders Argentina in the finals as Ferran Torres struck in extra-time to seal their second championship title in history.
Borussia Dortmund had one of the largest contingents of any club at the tournament with 10 players, two of whom even reached the quarter-finals, the farthest of them all.
With the North American showpiece now behind us, let's rank every BVB star on how well they performed for their respective national teams:
Gregor Kobel (Switzerland) - 7.5
Borussia Dortmund's talismanic custodian continued his fine run of form into the World Cup too, ranking among the top three for saves made with 20. He even stopped a penalty in their shootout win over Colombia and kept two clean sheets in three knockout games as La Nati reached the quarter-finals for the first time since 1954.
Nico Schlotterbeck (Germany) - N/A
It all began on a dreamy note for Nico Schlotterbeck, Dortmund's defensive lynchpin. He struck in their 7-1 opening day victory over World Cup debutants Curacao but picked up a tournament-ending hamstring injury in their next game, cutting his North American sojourn short.
Waldemar Anton (Germany) - 6
Unfortunately, his resolute showings with Borussia Dortmund didn't translate into a first-team place for Germany at the 2026 FIFA World Cup as Anton played only two games out of four, coming off the bench on both occasions. He played only seven minutes of their Curacao thrashing and another 42 against Paraguay, where he kept Germany from conceding a late goal in normal time and then in the extra-time period.
Ramy Bensebaini (Algeria) - 6
Lionel Messi devoured him in Algeria's 3-0 loss to Argentina on the first day, although Ramy Bensebaini delivered a defensive masterclass against Jordan in their next. But he was found wanting again during their pulsating 3-3 draw with Austria and then in the 2-0 loss to Switzerland in the Round of 32.
Felix Nmecha (Germany) - 7
It was a matter of great pride for the Borussia Dortmund contingent that Germany's first goal of the 2026 FIFA World Cup was scored by one of their own as Nmecha announced himself in style. He also bagged an assist in the match, and backed it up with another one in their comeback win over Ivory Coast. But the 25-year-old made an error leading to goal in their 2-0 loss to Ecuador and failed to show up against Paraguay.
Marcel Sabitzer (Austria) - 7
Austria's anchor man was phenomenal in the group stages, dictating the play during their Jordan win and never backing down against Messi. Sabitzer then opened his account at the World Cup with a goal in the six-goal thriller against Algeria but couldn't help his team bow out against eventual champions Spain in the last-32.
Carney Chukwuemeka (Austria) - 5
His international career with Austria began with a goal on debut in March but it now appears like a distant memory with Chukwuemeka merely playing a bit-role at the 2026 FIFA World Cup and never scoring or making an assist.
Maximilian Beier (Germany) - 5
Due to fierce competition for places in Germany's attacking vanguard, we saw Maximilian Beier just once at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, coming off the bench for 26 minutes against Ecuador on matchday three of the group stages but offered no great shakes.
Daniel Svensson (Sweden) - 6
Daniel Svensson gradually grew into Sweden's squad, starting off by playing just a minute against Tunisia before a 15-minute cameo in the draw with Japan. He finally made his first start of the tournament against France, but couldn't pull up any trees as the Blagult were completely overrun by Kylian Mbappe and co. in their last-32 loss.
Julian Ryerson (Norway) - 6
Norway were one of the most exciting teams to watch at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, whether it was for former BVB star Erling Haaland's blistering exploits or their now-iconic 'Viking Row' celebration. Julian Ryerson clocked 216 minutes of action across four appearances, looking neat and tidy in defense but failed to register any assist after a prolific campaign with Dortmund that had yielded 18 in all competitions.
