Serhou Guirassy's latest heroics has evoked high praise from Manchester United legend Rio Ferdinand, who's perplexed at why the Guinean isn't getting the widepsread recognition he deserves.
The 30-year-old scored both of Dortmund's goal in their 2-1 win over Sabah in the Champions League on Tuesday, as the BVB ended their three-game winless run this month.
After seeing a shot saved earlier on, Guirassy broke the deadlock for the visitors in the 10th minute by turning home a rebound after Stas Pokatilov spilled Felix Nmecha's shot.
Eight minutes into the second half, he came back to haunt Sabah with a second goal, turning a fabulous Joey Veerman cross home from close-range to win it for them.
Ferdinand, now an acclaimed pundit and media personality, was full of praise for the striker after the match, saying he's still underrated.
"When you watch this guy, you sometimes wonder why he isn’t getting the recognition he deserves. For me, he’s a top striker, and I think he’s still underrated."
The focal point of Dortmund's attack since arriving from VfB Stuttgart in 2024, Guirassy has been a consistent source of goals for them and has now taken his tally for the season to six in all competitions in 10 games after tonight's talismanic double.
Ferdinand added that Dortmund would be struggling without his goals:
"I honestly wonder where Dortmund would be without him. He scores goals, makes the difference in important games, and he’s showing that he can deliver in the Champions League as well as the Bundesliga."
The double was Guirassy's second in the Champions League this season from three games, having also netted twice against Villarreal on matchday one. It's a testament to his ability to deliver on big occasions like these, as Ferdinand feels he deserves to play for the biggest clubs in the world.
"Scoring twice tonight is another reminder of his quality. I’m not disrespecting Dortmund because they’re a big club, but I think Guirassy has the ability to play at an even higher level. At some point, you have to ask yourself whether he should be playing for one of the biggest clubs in the world. A striker who can consistently produce numbers like his deserves to be competing for the biggest trophies."
Despite a phenomenal record of 66 goals from 106 appearances for Borussia Dortmund in all competitions, Serhou Guirassy is yet to win a trophy with the side.
