After Borussia Dortmund's nil-nil draw against Sporting CP, which eventually led to a spot in the Champions League Round of 16 due to the 3-nil win in Lisbon, former BVB goalkeeper and captain Roman Weidenfeller had some things to say about Dortmund's current situation. More specifically, Weidenfeller criticized the now-captain Emre Can for his post-match reaction to the home draw against Sporting, asking for a change in mentality:

"I see it as very careless that captain Emre Can stands there and says: We did what was necessary, and that was enough to reach the round of 16. What kind of approach is that?"

Weidenfeller also talked about the certain passiveness on the pitch against Sporting and, even with the qualification on aggregate, the former Dortmund legend highlighted the need for domination and offensive output for Dortmund in games like these at the Signal Iduna Park:

"On a Champions League night in Dortmund, the air and the pitch need to be on fire. The headline is Round of 16 reached, which, given the season so far, was not necessarily expected. That is the positive. The shocking part is that they did not score a goal today. A 0-0 at home is a bit underwhelming."

Following this Friday's draw, the Black-and-Yellows will now face Lille in the UCL Round of 16, with the second leg being played in France. It remains to be seen whether the Dortmund squad will take Weidenfeller's criticism positively or negatively, which could help dictate the remaining part of BVB's 2024/2025 season.
