Serhou Guirassy just flipped the script against Villarreal

Serhou Guirassy has been somewhat of an enigma this season. He began on a strong note, firing on all cylinders to rack up five goals from just their opening four games in all competitions before running out of steam.

From the next 10, he bagged just twice more as the Guinean hitman experienced a steep yet inexplicable decline in form. Although the BVB have consistently managed to find goals with many others stepping up, Guirassy's travails in front of the net were a cause for concern for Niko Kovac's side, nonetheless.

However, the Croatian publicly backed his striker to recapture his mojo after benching him for their DFB Pokal encounter against Eintracht Frankfurt last month, a decision that had further highlighted Guirassy's misfiring form.

But last night, he once again displayed shades of his former self as Guirassy roared back to form with two goals that were key to Dortmund's epic 4-0 Champions League win over the in-form Villarreal.

The 29-year-old broke the deadlock in the second added minute of the opening stanza with a close-range header. As a corner was played in, Waldemar Anton headed it down for Aaron Anselmino to try a shot, but Guirassy then headed it home from almost point-blank range.

In the second half, Dortmund won a penalty after Juan Foyth denied a goal-bound effort with his hand that earned him a red card too. Guirassy stepped up to take it and saw his effort come off goalkeeper Luiz Junior.

However, the striker calmly took the ball back into his stride and then struck the bottom-right corner to score at the second time of asking to double Dortmund's advantage into the tie, as well as his tally for the evening.

Die Borussen then built on this momentum (and their numerical advantage) by netting twice more through Karim Adeyemi and Daniel Svensson as Villarreal were soundly beaten.

As for Guirassy, it was his first double in a match since 31 August when he scored twice against Union Berlin in the Bundesliga. He now has nine goals in all competitions this season.

Although it wasn't the most spectacular performance from him, Guirassy clinically took his chances and paved the way for his side's resounding victory. His brace on the night should boost his confidence in front of the goal and perhaps signal another ruthless streak.

Moreover, his return to form couldn't have come at a better time as Dortmund are up against Bayer Leverkusen in their next two games, first in the league and then in the cup. And for the record, Die Werkself have won their last four games in a row, including a shock 2-0 win over Manchester City at the Etihad last night.
