Spain won the 2026 FIFA World Cup following a 1-0 victory over Argentina in the finals last Sunday as La Roja clinched their second title in the competition.
Barcelona forward Ferran Torres struck the winner for Luis de la Fuente's side in the 106th minute as Lionel Messi's dream of back-to-back World Cup trophies was dashed.
In honor of Spain's latest achievement, let's look at all five Spanish players who have played for Borussia Dortmund:
Sergio Gomez
After eight years at Barcelona's fabled La Masia, Sergio Gomez joined Borussia Dortmund in January 2018 to continue his development. Three months later, he made his senior debut with the club but struggled for first-team chances and spent some time away on loan at Spanish team Huesca before permanently moving to Belgian side Anderlecht.
Mateu Morey
Another Spanish player who came and left without a trace, Mateu Morey's time at Borussia Dortmund was marked by lengthy injuries. In fact, there was a period where he didn't make any appearance for 1,015 days! Joining from Barcelona in 2018, Morey's troubled period at Signal Iduna Park ended in 2024 following which he returned to his hometown Mallorca in Spain.
Marc Bartra
A lack of first-team opportunities under Luis Enrique at Barcelona prompted Marc Bartra to join Borussia Dortmund in 2016 where the Spaniard saw more gametime but struggled to fully realize his potential. His tenure at the club would always be remembered for surviving a deadly blast in April 2017 when Dortmund were on their way to Westfalonstadion to face AS Monaco in a Champions League tie which saw the player undergo a surgery for a broken arm and a debris that pierced through his hand.
Mikel Merino
Part of the recent Spain squad that struck gold in the United States, Borussia Dortmund even issued a congratulatory message for Mikel Merino on their official X handle. The forward though, had a blink-and-you-miss-it kind of spell with the club, joining in February 2016 and then leaving that summer. During that period, he played only nine games for the BVB but never scored.
Paco Alcacer
Now onto the most successful Spanish player to ever for Borussia Dortmund. Paco Alcacer too was struggling to make a mark at Barcelona, so he joined Dortmund in 2018 on loan where the striker recaptured his mojo.
In 26 league games, he struck 18 goals and continued his fine run of form into the next season too, scoring five goals in 11 games during the first-half of 2019-20 season. But the arrival of Erling Haaland saw Alcacer lose his place in the XI and promoted him to return to Spain with Villarreal.
