Borussia Dortmund have officially extended Niko Kovac's contract until June 2029. The club views their current manager as part of their long-term plans after having transformed the side since taking over in February 2025.

His impact was almost immediate, lifting the side up from mid-table mediocrity to guiding them into Champions League football, before steering them to a second-place finish in the Bundesliga last season, their highest since 2023.

Although questions do remain over his playing style as the BVB have left a lot to be desired in the big games, Kovac appears to have the firm backing of the management. Here are the seven points they enlisted to highlight his achievements since taking the job:

1) Securing Champions League football after mid-season appointment

When Niko Kovac took charge of the club in February 2025, Dortmund were languishing in 11th place but he ultimately guided the side to fourth and helped them seal a Champions League qualification as the BVB won nine of their 14 matches under him with no other side collecting as many point as them during that period.

2) Fabulous first full-season

In Kovac's first full-season with the club, Dortmund achieved 73 points in the Bundesliga, their highest tally in seven years and one that could have even won them the Meisterschale in 2023. The club states that it's also their fifth-best points tally in the competition's history.

3) Record after 50 games

Dortmund accrued an impressive 107 points from their first 50 league games under the manager, one better than Lucien Favre (106) and two more than Thomas Tuchel (105).

4) Best points average

Niko Kovac currently boasts the best points-to-game ratio of any manager at 2.15 in the Bundesliga.

5) Most clean sheets

Dortmund set quite a few milestones in the 2025-26 season, such as conceding the lowest number of goals in the division at 34 and registering 15 clean sheets, the most the side has ever managed in a single top-flight campaign.

6) Return to pole position

Following the 1-0 win over VfB Stuttgart in the league on 19 September, Dortmund secured first position on the league table for the first time since May 2023.

7) Goals galore in the Champions League

Dortmund also highlighted their prolific goalscoring run in the Champions League under Kovac, netting three or more goals in seven games as the BVB have been one of the most prolific in the competition.
