West Ham star Konstantinos Mavropanos is reportedly eyeing a move to Borussia Dortmund this summer as the defender hopes to play in the Champions League.
According to Football Insider's Pete O'Rourke, the Greek international is placing the premium on playing in the premier club tournament of tournament over the lure of Premier League.
Having joined West Ham in 2023, Mavropanos has been a key figure in defense for the Hammers, but the club has seen a disappointing spell in the English top-flight this season.
With 33 points in the bag from 33 games, the London side is down in 17th place of the Premier League table and could be relegated at the end of the season if their results don't improve.
That could be a major reason for Mavropanos wanting to jump ships and he's no stranger to Bundesliga either, having spent three years at Stuttgart.
The 28-year-old's eye-catching displays even during a turbulent run for West Ham has caught attention from other Premier League clubs.
But according to transfer expert Florian Plettenberg, Borussia Dortmund have already held internal talks with the player which indicate their interests in genuine and concrete, going beyond just rumors.
West Ham could thereby find it difficult to hold on to one of their best players of the season, regardless of the outcome of their season.
The 28-year-old has a reliable figure in defense for the Hammers, averaging 1.3 tackles per game, 1.5 interceptions and a staggering six clearances per game, which is a testament to his anticipation and game-reading skill.
He has also registered a passing accuracy of 82.6% and even chipped in with three goals.
Amid the struggle for top-flight survival with an out-of-form West Ham, a move to Borussia Dortmund that promises Champions League football is really appealing for him.
Dortmund's Greek connection
Borussia Dortmund are no stranger to Greek players. In fact, they've had a successful working relationship with Sokratis Papastathopoulos while also developing Antonios Papadopoulos.
Speaking of Sokratis, the defender joined the BVB in 2013 under Jurgen Klopp and instantly became an instrumental figure in their backline. Over the next five years, he picked up one DFB Pokal Cup and two DFL Supercups.
Papadopoulos, a German of Greek descent, played three years in the reserve team of Dortmund but struggled to find regular gametime in their senior team, making only five league appearances before moving to Swiss side Lugano in 2024.
