It's been a tough few days for Borussia Dortmund fans. Post the international break, the supporters have been treated to one abject display after another. The late collapse in the 2-2 draw against Werder Bremen, followed by a 1-0 loss to Bodo/Glimt and then a frustrating 0-0 stalemate with Union Berlin - the BVB have endured a serious decline in form this month, with alarm bells about to go off.
However, the side cannot catch a breath just yet, with another six games lined up over the next 27 days before another international break in November in what could be a make-or-break period for them already. Here are three reasons why the Dortmund fans should be concerned:
1) Dortmund's season is unraveling, and how!
Three winless games into the second phase of the 2026-27 season and Dortmund's six-game winning run prior to the international break already feels like a distant memory. The decline since resuming business 10 days ago, has been steep.
While the defense continues to remain strong and robust, their offensive vanguard has been running on fumes. The BVB didn't score a goal against Werder Bremen for 80 minutes, while drawing a blank in consecutive away matches to Bodo/Glimt and Union Berlin.
2) Injury concerns aren't subsiding
For the first time in a while on Saturday, Niko Kovac had a squad at full strength. Well, besides the long-term absentees Emre Can, Giannis Konstantelias and Justin Lerma. But then, they were hit with a fresh concern after Konstantinos Karetsas went off after twisting his ankle.
It's been a recurring problem for Dortmund, especially under Kovac, and doesn't show any sign of subsiding, which has left the fans exhausted. This season alone, at least five different players have sustained a knock in less than two months of the campaign, hindering their progress as a unit.
3) Playing style remains unconvincing
Borussia Dortmund had been playing with fire for a while now. Despite all their milestones last season, the side's overall style of play under Kovac looked disjointed and haphazard. They relied on inidividual moments of brilliance, especially from substitutes, to get them through on multiple occasions.
The story has continued in the 2026-27 season too. The warning signs were there even during their prolific six-game winning run, such as falling 2-0 behind in the Hoffenhim game, or relying on a late Felix Nmecha double against Paderborn, but the BVB ignored it, and are now paying a hefty price for it.
