Tom Rothe proved to be the match winner for Union Berlin on matchday seven as he scored a goal and assisted another to continue his strong run of form since leaving Borussia Dortmund.

In a decision that came as a bit of a surprise, Borussia Dortmund agreed to sell the highly rated Tom Rothe this past summer. The talented left-back joined Union Berlin on a permanent transfer for a fee of around five million euros and has made an excellent start to life in the German capital.

Rothe has played a key role in Union Berlin's fine start to the season, and was the difference maker on Sunday in their Bundesliga clash against Holstein Kiel. Playing at left wing-back, the 19 year old downed the club he spent last season on loan at by assisting the opening goal before getting on the score-sheet himself late on.

Tom Rothe leads the way for high-flying Union Berlin

Aljoscha Kemlein opened the scoring for Union Berlin, getting on the end of Rothe's fine cross into the box in the 18th minute. Rothe then doubled the away side's lead in Kiel with a thumping header from a corner in the 89th minute. His second goal of the season helped Bo Svensson's side move up to fifth place in the Bundesliga standings.

After being sucked into a relegation battle last season, Union Berlin appear to be on the up again and have made an impressive start to their current campaign. They also claimed a 2-1 win over Borussia Dortmund earlier this month, with Rothe playing a crucial role at left wing-back.

Borussia Dortmund do have a buy-back clause for Tom Rothe which would make it possible for the club to sign him again if he continues his impressive run of form for Union Berlin. But for now, the young left-back is making a big impact for Union Berlin and will hope to keep his run going in the coming months.
