Borussia Dortmund sporting director Nils-Ole Book admits that individual defensive errors proved costly for his team in their 2-1 loss to Bayern Munich on Saturday.
BVB head coach Niko Kovac's wait for a silverware with the club continued as Nathaniel Brown and Michael Olise's first-half goals were enough to hand the Franz Beckenbauer Supercup to Bayern.
Fabio Silva came off the bench and offered a glimmer of hope with a strike in the 75th minute to reduce the arrears, but the home team failed to find the elusive equalizer.
Ole Book, who was in the stands for the game, lamented his team's mistakes that eventually came back to bite them.
"Disappointment prevails; we had set our sights high for today. The first few minutes were okay, but then we made too many mistakes."
Bayern opened the scoring in the 28th minute when Brown was the beneficiary of a poor attempted clearance from Ramy Bensebaini, who nudged the ball straight at hime while dueling Olise.
Taking one, nonchalant touch, Brown then slotted it home beyond Gregor Kobel as the Dortmund custodian was rooted to the spot.
The Bavarians were then gifted a second goal in the added minutes of the first half, as a poor pass from Jobe Bellingham allowed Olise to race forward and latch on to it before bundling it for 2-0.
Dortmund grew into the match after the break, displaying renewed firepower in attack with Serhou Guirassy coming close in the 53rd minute.
But it was only at the start of the final quarter when the hosts could finally pull one back as Daniel Svensson found Silva unmarked inside the box and the Portuguese striker made no mistake from from close-range.
In the third minute of stoppage-time, Maximilian Beier had a golden chance to equalize for Dortmund when Anton laid it off for him inside the box, but the forward wasted it by firing it over the bar from barely 10 yards out.
Ole Book found solace in their second-half performance, especially in the attacking half:
"In the second half, we showed a different side. We demonstrated our power and what we’re capable of offensively. When we play forward, when we’re bold and precise in possession, we’re a good team and can play good football."
Borussia Dortmund now turn their attention towards the Bundesliga, as the side open their 2026-27 campaign in the German top-flight on Saturday, 29 August at home to Hamburg.
