"What a beautiful assist" - Fans hail Joey Veerman for classy display in Champions League win over Sabah

Borussia Dortmund fans are raving about Joey Veerman for a fine display in their 2-1 win over Sabah FK in the Champions League on Tuesday.

Serhou Guirassy netted both their goals on the night at the Baku Olympic Stadium but Veerman ran the show with his terrific passing range and creativity.

He laid six crosses on the night and created two big chances, including the one which led to Guirassy's second of the night.

Spotting the Guinean on the left side of the box, the midfielder sent in a lovely ball which Guirassy connected with a delicate touch to guide it beyond goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov.

The 27-year-old himself had two shots on target, one of which came from a free-kick from just outside the box which Pokatilov had to dive low to save just before the goal-line.

Fans were impressed from Veerman for another top-notch display, taking to X to lavish praise on the Netherlands international:

A Dortmund fan named Florian highlighted that Veerman was at the centre of all their offensive plays:

"Without Joey Veerman, they would hardly create a single scoring chance. He is involved in almost every attack when he's on the pitch. If he doesn't play, the game plan is far too poor to score goals."

Football analyst Oscar Mendoza hailed the 27-year-old as an elegant player:

"Joey Veerman as an organizing central midfielder is a guarantee.

A very elegant footballer, with great judgment for distributing, giving continuity to possessions, and bringing fluidity to ball circulation.

Very good performance against Sabah."

Another verified user Andres Weiss hoped that last night's match would force Kovac to reconsider Veerman in his tactical system:

"Joey Veerman has one of the best feet among all the midfielders in the major leagues, and Borussia Dortmund keeps refusing to hand him the reins of their team.

I don't know what more Kovac needs to make it happen. I hope today serves as a turning point for him."

BVB Stats, a page dedicated to statistics related to Dortmund stars, broke down Veerman's impressive numbers from the day:

"#BVB | Joey Veerman in the F3 of the League Phase of the #UCL vs Sabah:

◉ Assist
◉ 1st in touches [98]
◉ 1st in line-breaking passes [18]
◉ 1st in precise passes in the final third [12]
◉ 1st in accurate crosses [3]

Unbelievable that he was taken off the team."

This X user also felt Veerman should be starting regularly for Dortmund:

"I'll never get tired of praising Joey Veerman. What a beautiful assist for Guirassy's goal!

Veerman is one of the players who has the most to add to this team. He's an excellent passer and distributes the game very well.

He's an unquestionable starter."
