Borussia Dortmund stars are currently away on international duty after over a month of club fixtures as national teams resume business for the first time since the conclusion of the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Up to 20 players from the BVB squad will be in action with their national teams over the course of the next three weeks, including five who have been summoned by their country's youth sides. With such a massive international contingent, we got curious - which of them have the most national-team experience? Here are the top five:
5) Nico Schlotterbeck - 29 caps (Germany)
It speaks to Dortmund's youthful squad when a player with just 29 international appearances make the cut into a list like this. Nico Schlotterbeck's rise as a resolute and technically-gifted defender of his generation coincided with him cementing his place in the Germany national team too.
Debuting in March 2022 when he was still a Freiburg player, Schlotterbeck hasn't missed any major tournament for Die Mannschaft since then, playing at the 2022 FIFA World Cup, Euro 2024 and lately at the 2026 FIFA World Cup too where he scored in their opening game against Curacao.
4) Julian Ryerson - 47 caps (Norway)
Next up is Dortmund's assist king-turned-prince-of-crosses, Julian Ryerson. After lining up for Norway's youth teams, he made his senior debut in November 2020 and has since established himself as a key part of their tactical set-up.
Following a brilliant run of 18 assists with Dortmund last season, he earned a call-up to Norway's World Cup squad too and featured in four games, but failed to make a direct goal-contribution at the showpiece. He now gears up to contribute in their 2026-27 Nations League campaign starting tonight against Denmark.
3) Emre Can - 48 caps (Germany)
A well-traveled player with a career spanning across Germany, England and Italy, Can was once among the most sought-after midfielders before injuries started wreaking havoc on his playing time. While at Liverpool in 2015, he received his first national team call-up under Joechim Loew and played as their right-back.
Soon, he transitioned into their anchorman tasked with switching plays from the deep while also shielding them from counter-attacks. He's also had spells as a centre-back between 2019 and 2021, but taked with responsibilities of a defensive midfielder at major tournaments.
2) Ramy Bensebaini - 86 caps (Algeria)
Algeria has produced some marquee attackers in recent times such as Riyadh Mahrez, Baghdad Bounedjah, Yacine Brahimi and Islam Slimani. But even amid their stellar offensive lineup, a defender like Ramy Bensebaini has managed to carve a niche for himself as their reliable and versatile defender.
While at Dortmund he's a left-sided centre-back, Bensebaini has switched between the left-back and centre-back position with the Algerian national team and been effective in both roles. He was among their standout performers at the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where Algeria made it until the Round of 32.
1) Marcel Sabitzer - 102 caps (Austria)
Dortmund's most capped international player is 32-year-old Marcel Sabitzer, who at 102 appearances, is Austria's fourth most capped player of all-time too. Das Team noticed his talents when he was plying his trade in the second division of Austrian football with Admira Wacker in 2012, at which point he was just two years into his senior club career too.
Sabitzer has been sort of a utility player with Austria, playing across different positions in midfield and attack over the years, but never coming up short in any of those. He's also racked up 27 goals and 23 assists for them, most of which have come in their Euro and World Cup qualifiers as the star has played a vital role in carrying the side to several major tournaments in the last 10 years.
