Borusia Dortmund and Guinea striker Serhou Guirassy thanked fans for their support as the National Elephants beat Kenya 1-0 in their 2027 Africa Cup of Nations qualifier on Thursday.
The 31-year-old was the difference-maker for his side with a goal in the 32nd minute which proved enough to down the Harambee Stars and pick up their first three-pointer in the campaign.
Interestingly, the match was also held just a day before Guinea's 68th Independence Day as the win added a layer of novelty to their celebrations.
On his official Instagram handle, Guirassy shared a few pictures of himself during the match with the caption:
"Eve of Independence Day. A wonderful way to celebrate with a victory. So proud for the people. You deserve it. [emoji of Guinean flag]"
Guinea also played a game on home turf after four years due to CAF's ban on account of their stadiums not meeting the required standards to host international fixtures. It compelled the National Elephants to play their 'home' games at neutral venues such as Morocco and Senegal.
But with the embargo now lifted, international football finally returned to the West African nation for the first time since June 2022 as they hosted Kenya at the 28 September stadium in the capital of Conakry.
Guirassy had spoken of the special occasion to the press before the game, but also mentioned it in his post-match comment on social media, highlighting the 'pleasure' of playing with the national team at home again.
The caption further reads:
"Thank you to the whole team for your efforts. It’s a great pleasure to be back home after so many years. Thank you for the incredible support🔥🤯#alhamdulillah"
Guirassy shines on international football's return to Guinea
On a special occasion like this, Serhou Guirassy just had to show up, almost like it was set in stone. After creating a goal for Seydouba Cisse in their opening day loss to South Africa, the striker got on target himself against Kenya.
Holding off his marker inside the box, Guirassy played on Yadaly Diaby, who kept his blistering run going but couldn't the control the ball and went down under Kenyan pressure. Guirassy noticed that the ball broke loose and raced on to it, cutting it across to his left and them scrambling a finish under Kenyan goalkeeper Bryne Odhiambo.
The goal was his 12th for Guinea from 30 appearances and a fifth in all competitions for club and country this season.
