Sky's the limit for Mathis Albert. The 17-year-old Borussia Dortmund starlet made his USMNT debut on Sunday wherein he won a penalty for his side within minutes of coming on. But last night, he took his breakthrough up by another notch with a debut goal.
Once again, Albert came off the bench and made a solid impact as a substitute, delivering another strong performance in the attack as the USMNT crushed Chile 4-2 in a splendid comeback victory in Missouri.
Albert becomes youngest USMNT scorer
Just months after becoming the youngest American to ever debut in the German Bundesliga, Mathis Albert has now added another feather to his cap with his goal last night, becoming the youngest ever scorer for the US men's national team.
As Antonee Robinson delivered a free-kick inside the area, Auston Trusty headed it across to the centre where an on-rushing Mathis Albert connected with it, striking it against the underside of the bar and into the net.
In just his second appearance with the national team, Albert opened his goalscoring account. But more importantly, he surpassed the previous goalscoring record held by former BVB ace Christian Pulisic at 17 years and 253 days and set a new one at 17 years and 131 days.
BVB starlet impresses again
Long before his goal in the 93rd minute, Albert had already impressed with his uncanny dribbling skills. We already got a glimpse of that in their last match when he burst forward towards the penalty area which drew a desperate challenge from a Peruvian defender and won his side a penalty.
On Tuesday too, the BVB teen was unstoppable on the ball, showing encouraging willingness to carry it forward and ask questions of the Chilean defense. He mustered four shots in the match, which is the most by a USMNT player besides only Julian Hall (5), but in 52 fewer minutes than him.
Albert also created a wonderful opportunity for Damion Downs after brilliantly working his way forward and playing Downs in a dangerous shooting position. But the latter's effort was saved by Chilean goalkeeper Lawrence Vigouroux.
Across two cameo appearances now, the youngster has given a glimpse of his raw talent and potential while showing the ability that could make him a leader in the side one day. Hopefully, Borussia Dortmund is taking note. The lad is just too good to warm the bench. His USMNT displays must surely convince Niko Kovac to give him regular opportunities hereon.
