Defensive Midfield: Axel Witsel

Axel Witsel will undoubtedly be the man in front of the Borussia Dortmund back line this season. He was one of Dortmund’s most consistent performers last season and he showed just how high of a level he could play at, especially in the first half of the season.

Witsel is one of the first names on the team sheet for Favre, his blend of physicality and technicality makes him the near perfect defensive midfielder. He also has the pace, dribbling and versatile passing ability to jump into the attack and help with the build up play.

But Lucien Favre will want to make sure that Witsel gets a bit of rest between games, so he is not burned out by March, like he was last season. Luckily, he has Julian Weigl who is more than capable of filling in for the Belgian international.
