Calvin Stengs

Our final name on the list of potential replacements for Sancho once his time with Borussia Dortmund comes to an end is Calvin Stengs. The Dutchman is another option Dortmund could potentially look into as a player worthy of picking up the mantle from where Sancho leaves it.

Stengs currently plies his trade for Dutch side AZ Alkmaar. This season, the rising star has scored 4 times and provided 7 assists in the Dutch Eredivisie, and chipped in with another 2 goals and 2 assists in the Europa League. Stengs has formed a stellar partnership with fellow teammate Myron Boadu, with quite a few of his assists coming from helping the young Dutchman find the back of the net.

Stengs, like Hložek, is a rather tall player. At 6’1″ he makes for a towering sight on the wing, however his play style is as composed and sleek as one would expect from a player in his position.

His 7 assists in the league do a good job of exemplifying his eye for a pass, something Sancho has been lauded for while with Dortmund. Stengs’ assists have come from a variety of positions, and he has shown that he can just as well provide a well weighted through ball as he can a cross or cut-back assist to his teammates in the box. His ability to motor past opponents will also do a good job of compensating for the pace Dortmund will lose up front when Sancho finally departs.

Feasibility wise, a transfer for Stengs would be easier in my book than say for the likes of Rashica. The transfer would likely be less of a hassle namely because Dortmund wouldn’t be looking to purchase the player from within the league. The question is whether Dortmund are indeed looking for a gem they can craft in their own image or an established player more guaranteed to help the team from the off.
