Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc has confirmed that Lucien Favre will stay on as head coach for next season.
Favre’s future has been the topic of a lot of discussion and speculation throughout the season. Multiple reports in Germany claimed yesterday, that despite the rumours, Favre will be staying on as Borussia Dortmund head coach next season.
And now Michael Zorc has confirmed that the Swiss trainer will indeed be sitting in the Dortmund dugout next season. Favre’s contract is due to expire at the end of next season, and Zorc did not rule out an extension for the 62 year old either.
Speaking during the virtual pre-match press conference ahead of Saturday’s season finale against Hoffenheim, Zorc said:
"“We’re going into the new season in the same set-up, and we want to go on the attack again. We have a good relationship of trust and will hold talks in due course.”"
Favre has helped Borussia Dortmund finish as runners-up to Bayern Munich in each of his two seasons in charge of the club. Now that his future has been confirmed, he will have his sights set on leading the Black and Yellows’ title charge for next season. During the press conference, Favre said that winning the title remains Borussia Dortmund’s goal, but added that beating Bayern will not be an easy task.
"“We always have the goal to compete for the title,” Favre said. “But it is very, very hard against #FCBayern. And you can’t forget the competition.”"
Zorc was also asked about his own future, after signing a one year extension to his Borussia Dortmund contract, which will keep him at the club until 2022.
"“I’m very happy and very motivated,” Zorc said. “We still want to achieve something with the club. I like being on board and I still feel very vital. The appreciation of the club and my wish to stay in this position motivate me.”"
Zorc also revealed during the press conference that highly rated teenage striker Youssoufa Moukoko will begin training with the first team “as soon as possible”. He also confirmed the club’s desire to find a solution with Real Madrid to extend the loan deal of wing-back Achraf Hakimi.
