Borussia Dortmund star Gio Reyna wins US Soccer’s Young Male Player of the Year award

Borussia Dortmund attacking midfielder Gio Reyna has been named U.S. Soccer’s Young Player of the Year for 2020.

Gio Reyna has been one of the biggest breakout stars of 2020, and he caps of an incredible year by winning the U.S. Soccer Young Male Player of the Year award. The Borussia Dortmund star received 79% of the total votes, and follows in the footsteps of Barcelona’s Sergiño Dest, Chelsea’s Christian Pulisic and Werder Bremen’s Josh Sargent by winning the award.

Reyna has enjoyed a stellar 2020 which began when he was called up to the Borussia Dortmund squad for the mid-season training camp in Marbella. He broke into the first team in the second half of last season, and is now a regular starter for the Black and Yellows. The 18 year old has made a total of 40 appearances in all competitions for Dortmund, scoring five goals and providing eight assists.

Earlier this season, Reyna became the youngest player in Bundesliga history register a hat-trick of assists as he helped Borussia Dortmund thrash SC Freiburg 4-0.

His performances saw him earn a new five year contract with Borussia Dortmund when he turned 18 last month.

Reyna also made his senior debut for the United States National Team in November, and scored his first international goal on his second appearance just a few days later. The goal helped him become the third youngest scorer in USMNT history.

Reyna has a very bright future ahead of him, and he will certainly be an important part of the Borussia Dortmund team for years to come.
