Borussia Dortmund have extended the contract of Marwin Hitz, with the goalkeeper signing a new two-year deal with the club. Hitz’ contract was due to expire at the end of the season, but now he will stay with the Black and Yellows until at least June 2023.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc said that extending the contract of Marwin Hitz was a “logical” decision for the club. “We hold Marwin in very high regard, both in sporting terms and as a person. The contract extension is therefore a logical step.”

Hitz joined Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer from FC Augsburg in July 2018, and has been the team’s second choice goalkeeper ever since. The 33 year old has made a total of 25 appearances across all competitions over the last two and a half years, keeping 11 clean sheets in the process. More than half of those appearances have come this season, as first-choice goalkeeper Roman Bürki has had to deal with a number of injuries.

Hitz has been a reliable presence in goal whenever called upon, but did come under the spotlight earlier this month as a result of his mistakes in the games against SC Freiburg and TSG Hoffenheim.

There were rumours that Hitz could leave Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer in search of more playing time. But now he has decided to stay on for another two years.

Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a move for a new goalkeeper in recent weeks. But with both first-team goalkeepers now under contract until the end of the 2022/23 season, it remains to be seen if they will still look to sign a new shot-stopper this summer.
