Borussia Dortmund still have plans to sign a new goalkeeper in the summer despite extending the contract of Marwin Hitz. According to Sky Germany, the Black and Yellows definitely want to sign a new number one to replace Roman Bürki in the summer.
The report adds that Marwin Hitz will continue as Borussia Dortmund’s second choice goalkeeper after signing a new two year deal with the club. The 33 year old joined BVB on a free transfer from Augsburg in 2018 and has made 25 appearances across all competitions over the last two and a half years.
Borussia Dortmund have been linked with a number of goalkeepers in recent weeks. Sky claim that Thomas Strakosha is an option, and the BVB bosses have already held talks with the agent of Lazio goalkeeper. Peter Gulacsi is another reported candidate, with the RB Leipzig goalkeeper having a release clause in his contract. SL Benfica’s Odysseas Vlachodimos, Fiorentina’s Bartłomiej Drągowski and Manchester United’s Dean Henderson have also been linked.
Sky believe that if Borussia Dortmund do bring in a new goalkeeper in the summer, Roman Bürki will likely have to leave the club. The 30 year old only signed a contract extension with BVB in June 2020, but his days at the Signal Iduna Park could be numbered if a new goalkeeper arrives.
Bürki, who is set to return to the squad this weekend after recovering from a shoulder injury, has failed to convince with his performances so far this season.
Both Roman Bürki and Marwin Hitz are now under contract with Borussia Dortmund until the end of the 2022/23 season.
