Sebastian Kehl will succeed Michael Zorc as the Borussia Dortmund sporting director when the latter steps down at the end of the 2021/22 season. According to Kicker, the former Borussia Dortmund captain convinced CEO Hans-Joachim Watzke with his ambition and ideas, and will now become the club’s next sporting director.

The magazine adds that Kehl was a driving force behind Borussia Dortmund’s decision to appoint Marco Rose as the new head coach. He is also said to have been responsible for the implementation of the hygiene concept in the early phase of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Kehl is currently the head of the licensed players’ department at Borussia Dortmund, and signed a contract extension until 2022 last year. He has been working closely with Michael Zorc since 2018, and has always been the clear favourite to take over as sporting director in 2022.

Zorc is set to call time on his 44 year long Borussia Dortmund career by retiring at the end of the 2021/22 season.

Borussia Dortmund were recently linked with a move for VfB Stuttgart sporting director Sven Mislintat. But with Kehl now getting the nod, it remains to be seen if Mislintat will still be brought in. It was reported that the BVB bosses consider the idea of Kehl and Mislintat working together as an appealing option.
