Manuel Akanji has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent performers in recent weeks. Now Michael Zorc has heaped praise on the ‘complete defender.’

With Mats Hummels suspended for the crucial Bundesliga six-pointer against VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday, Akanji led the Borussia Dortmund defence brilliantly. He took the dangerous Wout Weghorst out of the game with his robust defending, and helped make sure that the Black and Yellows did not concede a goal despite going down to ten-men in the second half.

Borussia Dortmund sporting director Michael Zorc was full of praise of Akanji’s performance against Wolfsburg, as well as his recent run of form. In an interview with Ruhr Nachrichten, Zorc said:

"“Manuel has been playing at a very high level for many months now. He does his job really well and in Wolfsburg he almost managed to score another headed goal. We are very happy with him. He is playing at least as well as he did when he first joined us in the winter of 2018. He is a pretty complete defender.”"

Akanji has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most used players so far this season. Only Mats Hummels and Erling Haaland have chalked up more minutes this season than the Swiss international. He has made a total of 36 appearances so far this season, and has also scored two vital goals.

The 25 year old’s performance have been crucial to Borussia Dortmund’s recent upturn in form. Der BVB have won each of their last four games in the Bundesliga, and now have every chance of finishing in the top four. Dortmund are just a point behind fourth placed Eintracht Frankfurt, with three games left in the Bundesliga season.
