Borussia Dortmund: Emre Can and Reinier back in training ahead of Bundesliga opener
Emre Can and Reinier both returned to training on Tuesday as Borussia Dortmund stepped up their preparations for this weekend’s Bundesliga clash against Eintracht Frankfurt.
Borussia Dortmund began their preparations for Saturday’s Bundesliga opener against Eintracht Frankfurt on Tuesday. Among those involved in the training session was Reinier Jesus, who is back in Dortmund after helping Brazil win the Olympic gold medal in Tokyo last weekend.
According to Ruhr Nachrichten, Emre Can also took part in Tuesday’s training session. The German international has pretty much recovered from his calf problem and completed parts of team training on Tuesday. At the moment it remains to be seen if he will be able to start against Eintracht Frankfurt on Saturday.
If the Eintracht Frankfurt game comes too soon for Can, Antonios Papadopoulos will likely retain his place in the Borussia Dortmund starting XI. The BVB U-23s centre-back started alongside Manuel Akanji in the DFB-Pokal first round tie against SV Wehen Wiesbaden last weekend. And Borussia Dortmund’s injury crisis in defence could present him with the opportunity to make his Bundesliga debut this weekend. Fellow U-23s centre-back Lennard Maloney will also likely be in the squad.
Mats Hummels (patellar tendon) and Raphael Guerreiro (calf) will miss the Bundesliga matchday one clash against Eintracht Frankfurt with their respective injuries. Also absent will be Thomas Meunier and Julian Brandt, who are in quarantine after testing positive for COVID-19 last week. Dan-Axel Zagadou, Soumaila Coulibaly, Nnamdi Collins, Mateu Morey, Marcel Schmelzer and Marius Wolf also remain out.
