Borussia Dortmund’s selection headache

With Manuel Akanji (knee surgery) and Dan-Axel Zagadou (Covid-19) both set to miss the game against Eintracht Frankfurt, Marco Rose has another difficult selection decision to make. Mats Hummels will lead the Borussia Dortmund defence against the Eagles. But it will be interesting to see who gets the nod to start alongside the veteran defender.

Marin Pongracic is the only other natural centre-back in the first-team, making him the obvious choice. But his performances this season have been far from convincing.

Axel Witsel and Emre Can are the other two alternatives available to Marco Rose. But they have also struggled when used in defence this season. Witsel and Pongracic started in central defence during Borussia Dortmund’s 3-2 defeat to Hertha Berlin just before the winter break.

Luckily, there aren’t too many other injury concerns for the Black and Yellows to deal with. While Marius Wolf (Covid-19) is unavailable, Gio Reyna and Youssoufa Moukoko could return to the squad. And Marco Rose will no doubt be pleased about the fact that his team’s injury crisis is finally showing signs of easing up.
