Report: Manchester United step up interest in Manuel Akanji
Manuel Akanji could leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer, and Manchester United are reportedly stepping up their efforts to sign him.
With less than 18 months left on his Borussia Dortmund contract, there is a possibility that Manuel Akanji could leave in the upcoming summer transfer window. The Black and Yellows would like to extend his contract, but it remains to be seen whether the two parties will be able to reach an agreement.
Manchester United are interested in signing Akanji, and are reportedly prepared to pay him a salary that Borussia Dortmund simply cannot match. BILD claim that United are serious about their interest in signing the Swiss international, and they are even offering him a four year contract with an annual salary of 15 million euros.
The tabloid adds that Borussia Dortmund can expect a fee in the region of 25-30 million euros if they decide to sell Akanji in the summer. That money will then have to be reinvested in a replacement, with SC Freiburg centre-back Nico Schlotterbeck reportedly high on their list of targets.
Borussia Dortmund have already strengthened their defence ahead of next season with the signing of Niklas Süle from Bayern Munich.
Reports have claimed in recent weeks that Manuel Akanji has already rejected a contract extension offer from Borussia Dortmund as he is holding out for a higher salary. And unless the 26 year old lowers his demands, chances are that he could leave the club in the summer.
Akanji has made a total of 28 appearances for Borussia Dortmund so far this season, and has been one of the team’s top performers in defence.
