Manuel Akanji looks very likely to leave Borussia Dortmund in the summer, with the club reportedly deciding against offering the defender an improved contract.
There has been a lot of speculation about Manuel Akanji’s future in recent weeks, with reports claiming that Manchester United are interested in signing him. The Swiss centre-back’s contract with Borussia Dortmund is set to expire at the end of next season. And a summer exit now appears to be the most likely outcome.
This is being reported by Ruhr Nachrichten, who add that Borussia Dortmund will not be making an improved contract offer to Akanji. The 26 year old has already rejected a contract extension offer from the Black and Yellows.
Manchester United are said to be interested in signing Akanji, but more clubs could also join the race for his signature. And Ruhr Nachrichten claim that Borussia Dortmund can expect a transfer fee of up to 30 million euros for the defender.
Akanji has been one of Borussia Dortmund’s most consistent performers this season. But it looks like his long-term future will now lie away from the club.
Borussia Dortmund have already signed a replacement for Akanji in Niklas Süle. The German international will join on a free transfer from Bayern Munich in the summer.
Nico Schlotterbeck is another player who could bolster the Borussia Dortmund defence in the summer. But the Freiburg centre-back has yet to make a decision on his future. Bayern Munich are also interested in signing him. Schlotterbeck could be the potential long-term replacement for Mats Hummels.
