Hans-Joachim Watzke has admitted that Borussia Dortmund’s decision to part ways with Marco Rose was a difficult one, but they must now look ahead with Edin Terzic.

Borussia Dortmund made the shock decision to part ways with Marco Rose earlier this month, just one season after his arrival, following an end of season analysis meeting. The decision came at the end of what was a very disappointing season for the Black and Yellows, as they underperformed in all competitions.

Marco Rose had to deal with a number of problems over the course of the season, including the team’s injury struggles. And Hans-Joachim Watzke has now admitted that the decision to part ways with the 45 year old wasn’t an easy one.

In an interview with Sky Sport during half-time of the Borussia Dortmund U-19s’ German championship final against Hertha Berlin, Watzke said:

"“We made the decision together. There was a little something missing on both sides. And that’s why we then felt that it might be good to part ways.”“It was a very difficult decision for all of us, Marco is a great coach, a great person. I wish Marco all the best. Nevertheless, our mission now is to look forward.”"

Following Marco Rose’s exit, the Borussia Dortmund CEO is now looking forward to the new season under Edin Terzic. The 39 year old has been appointed BVB head coach on a three year contract, and Watzke is confident that he can get the team back on track.

"“He is someone who appeals to the people in the Ruhr region, and he also recognises the spirit of Borussia Dortmund. We feel good with him now. But he still has to win games.”“We know one thing for sure, that we are in the process of changing a lot of things, and reconfiguring some things in the team. We have to be patient and give the team the time it needs.”"

Edin Terzic previously took over as Borussia Dortmund’s interim head coach following Lucien Favre’s sacking in December 2020. He guided Dortmund to the DFB-Pokal title and a top four finish before making way for Marco Rose at the end of the 2020/21 season and becoming the club’s technical director. And the BVB bosses will certainly be hoping that Terzic can pick up right where he left off back then.
