Borussia Dortmund internationals: Niklas Süle and Germany claim statement win over Italy

Niklas Süle helped Germany claim a dominant 5-2 win over Italy in the UEFA Nations League on Tuesday.

Germany ended their international break by delivering an emphatic statement of intent and claiming a 5-2 win over Italy on Tuesday at the Borussia-Park in Mönchengladbach. It was an excellent performance from Hansi Flick’s side, who moved up to second place in their UEFA Nations League group with the win.

Borussia Dortmund defender Niklas Süle started for Germany, playing in his third game of the international break. He was on the pitch for 87 minutes before being subbed off for Jonathan Tah. Julian Brandt was an unused substitute, while Karim Adeyemi and Nico Schlotterbeck were not included in the squad.

Germany took the lead in the 10th minute through Joshua Kimmich, before former Borussia Dortmund midfielder Ilkay Gündogan made it 2-0 from the penalty spot on the stroke of half time. Thomas Müller added a third early in the second half, before a quick-fire brace from Timo Werner helped Germany take a 5-0 lead.

Italy scored two consolation goals, with Wilfried Gnonto and Alessandro Bastoni finding the back of the net late on. But Germany went on to claim the 5-2 win.

It was an excellent performance from Germany, who were in control from the first whistle to the last. And the result will give them plenty of confidence with the World Cup just five months away. Germany are still unbeaten under Hansi Flick, having won nine and drawn four of their 13 games under his charge.

The win also helped Germany move up to second place in their UEFA Nations League group. They are one point behind leaders Hungary with two more games to go in the group phase.
