Sebastian Kehl has said that the futures of Marco Reus and Mats Hummels will become clearer in the next few weeks.

The current contracts of Marco Reus and Mats Hummels are both set to expire in the summer, and it remains to be seen if they will be staying on at Borussia Dortmund beyond the end of the season. Sebastian Kehl spoke about the duo’s futures during an appearance on ZDF’s Aktuelle Sportstudio.

"“Both players have left their mark on the club in recent years and are still shaping it. Marco Reus is handling the situation very professionally. Mats Hummels has accepted that we have added two strong central defenders in Nico Schlotterbeck and Niklas Süle. Both are working towards the club’s goals.”“A decision beyond the summer has not yet been made. We’re not ready yet. But there is a clear trend. We will make a decision in the next few weeks, not in April or May.”"

There has been plenty of speculation regarding Marco Reus’ future in recent weeks. The 33 year old was left on the bench for the first leg of Borussia Dortmund’s UEFA Champions League tie against Chelsea. But he has responded well and played a starring role in the Black and Yellows’ last two games (against Hertha Berlin and TSG Hoffenheim).

Mats Hummels has stated on a number of occasions in recent months that he is relaxed about his future beyond the end of the season. The 34 year old has seemingly lost his spot in the starting XI after rolling back the years with his performances in the first half of the season.

But he remains a crucial part of the squad and will no doubt get more playing time as games continue to come thick and fast.

Chances are that both Reus and Hummels will receive contract extension offers at Borussia Dortmund. And the hope will be that they can stay on and lead the younger players into what promises to be a very exciting era for the club.
