Borussia Dortmund 6-1 FC Köln: Key Takeaways
Haller and Reus hit personal and historical milestones
Among the players to make waves in Borussia Dortmund’s win over Köln, Marco Reus and Sebastien Haller hit important milestones in their careers. The former overtook club legend and former sporting director Michael Zorc as BVB’s second highest goalscorer of all time. Reus has a total of 150 Bundesliga goals, a feat only equaled or bettered by 15 other players in the league’s history.
It was a moment that certainly cemented Marco Reus’ place in Borussia Dortmund folklore and served well to underline his status as a BVB legend.
For Sebastien Haller, the match served as an opportunity to continue adding to his balance of goals for the season in some style. The striker netted his first brace for the club, which really emphasizes how far he has come since his cancer diagnosis, treatment and recovery. Every time Haller succeeds on the pitch seems to be one great victory after another in a world where the disease has caused so much pain. One can only continue to root for Haller as he continues to get back to his very best and play an important role for Borussia Dortmund in their front line.
Final thoughts:
Borussia Dortmund’s victory over Köln was the perfect response to an underwhelming display against Schalke. The team’s display has set the scene for a very tense encounter in Munich two weekends from now. Bayern have shown that they do have a wobble or two in them this season, and if the team is able to maintain this run of form, then they should be well prepared to face the challenge that awaits them on April 1st.
That being said, Borussia Dortmund are going into the game with a few uncertainties on the injury front. Gregor Kobel has been out of the starting XI since before the club’s game against RB Leipzig. Youssoufa Moukoko, Karim Adeyemi, Julian Brandt and most recently Jamie Bynoe-Gittens have also had to deal with being sidelined due to injuries. BVB’s success so far his been largely due to what was, at least initially, a fully healthy squad. One thing is certain however: the players Borussia Dortmund do have available on April 1st will face a stern test; a test that will probably make or break their title hopes this season.
