Borussia Dortmund will be looking at options to fill their midfield this summer, and Youri Tielemans is available on a free transfer from Leicester City.

In recent weeks, Borussia Dortmund have been faced with the very likely prospect of a Jude Bellingham departure. This seems like all but a formality at this point, with Sebastian Kehl vocalizing the club’s readiness for said departure, stating that as the club’s sporting director, he has to be “ready for anything”

Real Madrid have moved closer and closer to signing the young English international this summer, offering Bellingham a contract until 2029, cementing his place with Los Blancos for the long-term. It’s a move that will be the defining factor in Dortmund’s planning for the summer, as Bellingham has become the main focal point of their midfield.

In addition to Bellingham, long time midfielder Mahmoud Dahoud will be leaving the club on a free transfer to Brighton, making Die Schwarzgelben a little light in the middle of the park going forward. Add to this the now certain departure of Raphaël Guerreiro, who has had some blistering displays in midfield this season, and you now have BVB side that will be looking at the reality of a total rebuild in this area of the starting XI.

The likes of Conor Gallagher and Enzo Le Fée have both been touted as possible transfer targets, with the latter being linked very heavily with the black and yellows, and for good reason. Edson Álvarez also seems to be interested in moving to BVB, although he is not considered a replacement for Bellingham.

Borussia Dortmund have a hefty job on their hands. With the loss of multiple players now confirmed, they will need to bring in more than one new face to help compensate for this lack of quality and depth that they now face. The loss of Bellingham certainly needs to be compensated for talent-wise, but this will be a difficult task as Jude has proven time and time again that he is one of the best young talents in the world in his position.

In searching for fresh faces in midfield, Dortmund were previously linked with Belgian international Youri Tielemans, who has a history of being linked with Dortmund which goes back to İlkay Gündoğan’s departure for Manchester City. The Belgian international was much younger at the time; an 18 year old breakout star at Anderlecht with his whole career ahead of him.

Youri Tielemans is now set to leave Leicester City on a free transfer, which, under the right circumstances and with the right project proposal, opens the door for Dortmund to come in and make an offer for his services. Tielemans is a player that I have admired for some time, and perhaps it’s this selfish admiration that compels me to put his name forward as a possible addition to Borussia Dortmund’s midfield.

If we allow ourselves to delve deeper into what is likely a flight of fancy however, the reasoning behind why Borussia Dortmund should at least attempt to sway Tielemans into joining may become clearer, and we may find that the player would be a great fit at the Westfalenstadion.
