Story of the Season: Sébastian Haller

It is more than fair that Sébastian Haller deserves an award that symbolizes his fighting spirit through this season. Haller’s story in 2022/2023 is worthy of a movie, especially if we stop for a second and remember its beginning.

Due to illness on July 18, 2022, Sébastian Haller was suddenly cut from a preseason match against Valencia. Dortmund lost that game 3-1, but the news no one wanted to hear came a day later when BVB announced Haller’s diagnosis of testicular cancer. To fight for his life, Seb stayed away from football while treating his disease, and thankfully, he won that fight.

Haller beat his cancer and got back on the pitch in 2023. On February 4th, the Ivorian made his first start at the Westfalenstadion against Freiburg. If we hadn’t had enough emotions at that point, Seb scored his first goal in Black-and-Yellow in that 5-1 win.

To make that moment even more emotional, Haller scored precisely on International World Cancer Day, which makes him by and far the most deserving of the Story of the Season award. It is our expectation that this will not be the only heartening story he writes while wearing Dortmund’s colors.
