In what could well be his final season with Borussia Dortmund, Mats Hummels is continuing to show why he is one of the best defenders of this generation.

The past week was a reminder of how important Mats Hummels is to Borussia Dortmund. The veteran defender scored two goals against Freiburg to make history and help the team get back to winning ways in the league and was once again a key player in the win against Wolfsburg.

Even in the loss against Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Champions League, the veteran centre-back showed his resilience when the team was struggling.

Despite being in the twilight years of his career, Hummels is performing at the highest level consistently.

With his goals against Freiburg, he managed to achieve a record of scoring in 16 consecutive Bundesliga seasons – a feat that has only been recorded by five other players in history. He also became the oldest player in Borussia Dortmund history to score a brace.
