Borussia Dortmund are looking to strengthen their squad as the winter transfer window is currently underway. According to German news media BILD, BVB are interested in getting Club Brugge midfielder Aleksandar Stankovic to Signal Iduna Park this month.

However, they face competition from Bundesliga rivals Bayer Leverkusen, who also have the player on their radar, while his former team Inter Milan are considering bringing him back to the San Siro.

Given the competition for Stankovic, his asking price could rise if Dortmund wait until the summer, and hence, the club wants to move quickly and snap him up in the current transfer window itself.

Niko Kovac's side would also want to avoid a repeat of last year's fate when Ardon Jashari was linked with a move to Dortmund, only for AC Milan to beat them to his signature with a €36 million deal.

A defensive midfielder by trade, Stankovic is garnering eyes for his promising displays with Club Brugge, making 19 appearances in the Belgian Pro League this season and another 10 in Europe, including one against Bayern Munich in the Champions League.

Strong in the air and possessing excellent vision, Stankovic has great passing range too. Lately, he has also displayed rare attacking qualities, scoring twice and assisting once from the side's last three league matches, a testament to his versatility.

Son of Inter Milan legend Dejan Stankovic, the 20-year-old has proved to be a reliable figure in the midfield for Club Brugge since his €9.5 million move from the Nerazzurri last summer, and now, more formidable European teams are after him.

Dortmund would be bolstered to have such a talented young player in their ranks, although their midfield looks stacked right now, even with Pascal Gross returning to Premier League side Brighton & Hove Albion.

Niko Kovac has Jobe Bellingham, Felix Nmecha, Marcel Sabitzer and Emre Can to call upon. Roping in another midfielder seems odd in an already-packed roster but it could have positive implications in the seasons ahead, given his young age, promising talents and potential to become a star.

According to Transfermarkt, Stankovic's value has now risen to €15 million - almost 50% up since his move just six months ago, and could rise further until the summer if he continues in the same vein. Dortmund's aim here is to snap him up at a bargain, and perhaps, make profits off his sale a few years down the line given the club's history of buying young guns for low price and then raking in milions more through their transfer to a big side.
