Borussia Dortmund prospect Luca Reggiani's career has taken a steep downturn. He had a breakthrough 2025-26 season - at least in the second half of their campaign - wherein the Italian made his senior debut with the BVB and showed potential to develop into a bona fide star of the game. But in the new season, the 18-year-old has seen just 50 minutes of action in all competitions.

Latest reports now suggest he could leave the club if his first-team chances don't improve by January, as global transfer news expert Ekrem Konur reported on X that a return to Italy is possible for the Modena-born centre-back.

Reggiani has fallen behind in the pecking order

Earlier this season, right after Dortmund's preseason schedule, we had reported about how Luca Reggiani has fallen behind in their defensive pecking order to Filippo Mane. The writing was already on the wall for the Italian international heading into the new campaign.

Therefore it's not surprising to see that Niko Kovac has used him sparingly. In the absence of Nico Schlotterbeck and Ramy Bensebaini, the manager had preferred a back-three of Filippo Mane, Waldemar Anton and Joane Gadou, whom Reggiani replaced for the last half an hour of their comeback win over Hoffenheim.

His only other appearance with the club was in the DFB-Pokal clash with HEBC on 1 September, but Kovac didn't start Reggiani on that occasion too, subbing him on for Anton midway through the second period on a night where he'd made wholesale changes to his XI.

It was a subtle message to Reggiani that he's not an important part of Kovac's plans and his burgeoning career is now at the crossroads, prompting him to look for greener pastures elsewhere.

A return to Serie A is on the cards

If Reggiani doesn't see enough minutes with his club, it could also threaten his international prospects with Italy, for whom he made his senior debut in June this year but was called up only with their Under-21 side in the current international window.

Should he indeed move on from Signal Iduna Park, the defender has no shortage of suitors back home with Juventus in particular monitoring him, according to Italian media outlet Corriere dello Sport.

Reigning Serie A champions Inter Milan were also linked with the player in June. By August, the club was also reported to have made contact with his representatives, as per Buli News. This shows that the interest in him is serious, and the Nerazzurri could revive their pursuit of the centre-back come the winter transfer window. City rivals AC Milan had also shown interest in January, according to Ekrem Konur.
