Borussia Dortmund star Felix Nmecha is currently having a breakout year at the club and it clearly isn't going unnoticed with Europe's big guns.

According to Sky Sport, Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United have expressed an interest in the midfielder.

The 25-year-old is under contract with Dortmund until 2028, but Niko Kovac's side are interested in extending it early as reports suggest the club is looking to open talks right after the ongoing transfer window.

Coming through the ranks at Manchester City's academy, Nmecha began his professional career at VfB Stuttgart in 2021. Following a muted debut campaign, the German international displayed his potential in the 2022-23 season which caught Dortmund's eye as the Signal Iduna Park outfit proceeded to sign him later that summer.

At his new club too, Nmecha had a slow start but steadily cemented himself among the best players. He netted six goals and assisted a further three last season, while scoring five and chipping in with three more assists in the current campaign.

Besides, the player's real strength is his exemplary work-ethic, covering every blade of grass in the games while never shying away from a tackle. He also boasts an 86.4% passing accuracy in the Bundesliga this season.

Why Borussia Dortmund cannot afford to let Felix Nmecha leave

His departure would leave a massive void in midfield, one that can leave this part of Dortmund's set-up toothless and potentially hurt their attacking instincts as Nmecha is the driving force behind much of their offensive plays.

Having come through the ranks at City's academy like Phil Foden, Jadon Sancho and Cole Palmer, a move to Premier League may look tempting on paper as his midfield versatility - he's predominantly a defensive midfielder but can also operate in a more defensive role too - is appealing for teams like Chelsea and United.

Both sides are reportedly going to continue monitoring how the player develops in the coming months before making a formal bid, but Dortmund are reluctant to let him go. The club sees him as a valuable player in the squad and appear keen to extend his terms at the club.

Ahead of their Champions League clash with Spurs this week, Nmecha was asked if he'd like to play in the English top-flight one day, to which he replied saying it would be "special" for him but didn't elaborate on his thoughts further.

Nmecha has spent 14 years in England, a good chunk of it coming at City's academy before progressing into the senior team where he although made three appearance for the Sky Blues in three seasons - one each in the FA Cup, Carabao Cup and the Champions League.
