Toothless Dortmund suffer Champions League loss to revitalized Spurs

Just like that, Borussia Dortmund saw their long unbeaten run end.

Tottenham Hotspur, themselves on a three-game losing streak before this, produced a surprisingly dangerous attacking show to net twice in the first half that proved enough to condemn their visitors.

All signs pointed to a Dortmund win here, with the side boasting a menacing frontline coupled with a strong form that hadn't resulted in a defeat from their last seven games in all competitions.

Yet, somehow, Niko Kovac's side contrived to bottle it against a beleaguered, injury-ravaged Spurs team who were missing more than half of their first-team players, and having won just once from their last eight outings.

Cristian Romero drew the first blood in the 14th minute, before a red card to Daniel Svensson compounded Dortmund's challenge. The Lilywhites then capitalized on their numerical advantage to score a second as Dominic Solanke made it 2-0 after 37 minutes.

Dortmund, who were the joint highest scorer in the Champions League so far this season, never looked like clawing their way back into the match as they lacked their usual attacking flair and eventually succumbed to their second European defeat of the season.

Here are three talking points from the match:

Dortmund's biggest bogey team strikes again

Borussia Dortmund had a surprisingly bad record to Tottenham in the Champions League, losing their last four consecutive meetings prior to their latest clash.

Given the contrasting run of form of these sides coming into Tuesday's clash, Der BVB were billed as heavy favorites to prevail here and break the jinx.

But much to everyone's shock, Spurs sprung a surprise and inflicted yet another defeat on Dortmund, their fifth in a row now.

This is Dortmund's worst run against a single opponent in the Champions League right now.

Dortmund forwards have a stinker

With 19 goals scored before this match, Dortmund were the joint top-scoring side in the Champions League alongside Arsenal and hadn't drawn a blank in any of their six games so far, not even against Manchester City.

But somehow, a struggling Tottenham side managed to keep them at bay for 90 minutes. No mean feat by all accounts. Dortmund had only two shots on target in the game as their forwards failed to truly test the Spurs defense.

Serhou Guirassy retained his place in the XI despite his recent struggles but had a stinker in the opening stanza. Kovac then brought him off at the break in a tactical switch after Svensson's red card, while Fabio Silva couldn't pull up any trees either.

Julian Ryerson and Carney Chukwuemeka, both of whom have also popped up with goals for Dortmund, weren't given enough time or space on the ball to weave their magic wand here.

Progression hopes in a limbo

With the defeat, Dortmund's hopes of reaching the round of 16 directly are now in a limbo as the Bundesliga giants fell to 12th place on the Champions League table with only 11 points from seven games.

As things stand, Kovac's side will have to go through the knockout playoffs in order to reach the last-16. A win in their last game might still turn things around, but an away game to last season's finalists Inter Milan sounds equally daunting.
