With the Summer Transfer Window quickly approaching, many names are being linked with a move to Borussia Dortmund. Also, with the likely departures of several midfielders this summer, BVB will need to bolster their ranks and depth for another season playing in three competitions.
Now, according to Sky journalist Patrick Berger, Ritsu Doan is Dortmund’s latest target. Discussions have reportedly taken place both internally and with the player, while Eintracht Frankfurt are also interested and said to be ramping up their pursuit in the coming days. Many factors could influence Doan’s transfer decision, as playing in the UEFA Champions League holds great appeal. It’s unclear yet which two teams from Frankfurt, Dortmund, and Freiburg will qualify for Europe’s top club competition.
Although Ritsu Doan’s contract with SC Freiburg runs until 2027 with no release clause, there is a high likelihood that he will leave this summer, with Freiburg willing to entertain offers over 20 million euros.
Ritsu Doan is a 26-year-old Japanese International who plays as an attacking midfielder for SC Freiburg. While he excels best on the right wing, Doan can also drop back into a central midfield position, though he’s used almost exclusively on the right side. He’s scored nine and assisted seven in the Bundesliga this year, and has featured in every league match for Freiburg. His left-footed shots are one of his strongest traits, as seven of his nine goals were scored with his left foot.
Doan is a creative player who maintains a high level of fitness, which makes him an intriguing profile for Borussia Dortmund, and I wonder what Niko Kovač’s influence would be on a deal like this. If BVB secures the UCL football this weekend, then BVB will be a more exciting destination for many players.
