Borussia Dortmund crushed Mainz 4-0 in the Bundesliga on Friday to once again trim the gap between them and leaders Bayern Munich to three points, for now.
In-form Serhou Guirassy bagged another brace whereas Maximilian Beier was also on target before Ramy Bensebaini added a fourth late on.
The 05ers came into the fixture on the back of three consecutive Bundesliga wins and four from their last five but were absolutely blown away by Dortmund's set-piece prowess.
With a 15th win of the top-flight campaign, Die Schwarzgelben now have 51 points in the bag from 22 games and prepared for the Atalanta game in the Champions League in the most emphatic fashion.
Biggest win of the Bundesliga campaign
It was no ordinary win for Dortmund - it was the biggest of their 2025-26 league season yet. In fact, they hadn't won a top-flight encounter by a margin of four goals since an identical drubbing of Wolfsburg in May 2025.
With that, Niko Kovac's side also made a huge statement in the title race - they aren't giving up yet and are here to stay. The pressure is now on Bayern again to restore it to six points before the end of the weekend.
Guirassy is back and how!
Having struck in three consecutive league games and five times in total, Serhou Guirassy is well and truly back. The Guinean international bagged another brace last night to consolidate their grip on the match in the first half itself.
He nudged a header off Julian Brandt's corner before heading another one in, this time from an inch-perfect delivery from Julian Ryerson from another corner. That finally sees him go into the double digit for the campaign with 11 league goals (15 in all competitions).
Perfect dress rehearsal for Atalanta
Borussia Dortmund turn their attention towards the Champions League now as they face Atalanta in the playoffs to reach the round of 16. Last night's emphatic victory was the perfect way to prepare for it too as La Dea can expect a tough challenge at the Signal Iduna Park on Tuesday.
The BVB endured a poor end to the league phase of the competition last month, failing to win their last three while losing their last two - a pair of 2-0 losses to Tottenham Hotspur and Inter Milan. But since then, they have won thrice in a row but this win especially, will be a pep in their step.
