Borussia Dortmund staged an incredible comeback against Hoffenheim in the Bundesliga on Saturday. Falling 2-0 behind in the match, Niko Kovac's side scored thrice after the hour mark to turn the match on its head and seal all three points in Sinsheim.
Serhou Guirassy and Fabio Silva scored a goal apiece in 61st and 66th minute before debutant Ethan Nwaneri came off the bench to force an own goal as Leon Avdullahu and Tim Lamperle's goals for Die Kraichgauer were canceled out.
The win keeps Dortmund's 100% record to the top-flight season intact with two from two, but this isn't the first time that the club has come from behind and won a match. Here are five other memorable instances when the BVB turned a deficit of two or more around and won:
Borussia Dortmund 4-2 Borussia Monchengladbach (November 2023)
Coming into the fixture on the back of consecutive Bundesliga losses - against Bayern Munich and VfB Stuttgart - Dortmund were perhaps staring at a third one in a row after Gladbach went 2-0 up within 28 minutes of their clash at the Signal Iduna Park. Marcel Sabitzer and Niklas Fullfrug scored in the 30th and 32nd minute to bring the BVB level while Jamie Gittens completed the turnaround right at the stroke of 45 minutes. Donyell Malen then put the final nail in the Foals' coffin in stoppage-time.
Eintracht Frankfurt 2-3 Borussia Dortmund (January 2022)
It's not only at home where Dortmund have enjoyed memorable comebacks. They've done a few on the road too. In fact, all the games on this list hereon were played away from home. Back in January 2022, the Eagles had taken a commanding 2-0 lead in their match against the BVB, courtesy of a first-half double from Rafael Borré. Dortmund kept trailing until 71st minute when Thorgan Hazard came off the bench and made it 2-1, while Jude Bellingham and Mahmoud Dahoud scored a goal apiece in the final three minutes of normal time to complete the turnaround.
Bayer Leverkusen 2-4 Borussia Dortmund (September 2018)
Dortmund have had their share of issues at the BayArena in the past, and this day was unraveling quite fast too with Mitchell Weiser and Jonathan Tah putting Leverkusen 2-0 up inside 39 minutes. But Jacob Bruun Larsen and Marco Reus scored within four minutes of each other after the hour mark to bring the Prussians level. Paco Alcacer then came off the bench to net twice late on and adding gloss to the scoreline.
Augsburg 3-5 Borussia Dortmund (January 2020)
The day the world took note of a certain Erling Haaland. Dortmund were misfiring until then, missing a couple of good chances for which Augsburg made them pay and went 2-0 up. Julian Brandt pulled one back for the BVB but Florian Niederlechner restored their two-goal advantage again. Then came the Haaland show. Signed from Red Bull Salzburg just days ago, the Norwegian steps into the pitch and nets a sensational hat-trick, coupled with a goal from Jadon Sancho too, for a remarkable debut appearance.
MSV Duisberg 2-3 Borussia Dortmund (June 1995)
Although the BVB have come back from two goals down to prevail 3-2 on many occasions, this one holds a special place in the club's record books as it eventually helped them clinch their fourth Bundesliga title. It had nearly slipped away after Duisberg raced 2-0 ahead and Werder Bremen, their closest challengers, were leading in their game too. But Die Borussen got their act together in the second half and pulled off a sensational turnaround, holding aloft the Meisterschale a week later.
