Borussia Dortmund midfielder Joey Veerman has traveled extensively over the last week, but is delighted at having ended it on a positive note.
The BVB flew back home to Dortmund after beating Sabah FK 2-1 in the Champions League at the Baku Olympic Stadium on Tuesday.
It was their third consecutive game away from home, having played against Bodo/Glimt in Norway last week followed by a league game in Berlin, just three days later.
Amid all the hectic travel, Veerman revealed that he took some time off to visit his family back in the Netherlands, but only for a couple of hours. He said:
"I have a family with two children at home. So I went home for twelve hours, then we flew to Berlin. I came back, and after twelve hours we flew back to Baku again. So it wasn’t exactly the best week, but wrapping it up with a win is really nice."
After the home draw to Werder Bremen, Dortmund came away from both their travels without scoring a single goal, losing to Bodo before a goalless stalemate with Union Berlin as their season threatened to unravel after three winless outings.
But the match in Sabah offered some respite, with Serhou Guirassy scoring a talismanic brace. His second of the night was assisted by Veerman himself, with the Dutchman sending in a lovely cross inside the box for the Guinean to fire home from close-range.
The Prussians were dynamic in the attack, finishing with nine shots on target and creating seven big chances in a massive improvement from their lackluster displays in the final third previously to Bodo/Glimt and Union Berlin.
However, with more cutting edge, the scoreline could have been much bigger with Dortmund winning rather comfortably instead of clinging on to their lead in the dying embers with Sabah threatening in transitions. Veerman reflected on this, saying:
"We created a lot of chances. Compared to last week, I think we played a really good game today — in terms of chances and our style of play. But yes, we have to close out the game. We should have scored a lot more goals."
Veerman himself had two shots on target, both of which were saved, including a dangerous-looking free-kick he whipped in the first half which promppted Sabah goalkeeper Stas Pokatilov to dive low and save just ahead of the line.
Borussia Dortmund face Eintracht Frankfurt in their next game on Saturday, 24 October.
