Marco Reus has admitted that he could have earned ten times more money in Saudi Arabia, but felt that the opportunity to move to the United States with LA Galaxy was too good to turn down.
Borussia Dortmund legend Marco Reus made the decision to join MLS side Los Angeles Galaxy in the summer. The former BVB captain has now commented on his move away from the club and his decision to opt for a move to the United States over Saudi Arabia.
Marco Reus reflects on Borussia Dortmund exit and move to LA Galaxy
Several clubs were interested in signing Reus this past summer, including in the Bundesliga. But he did not want to play for another Bundesliga club after leaving Borussia Dortmund, and ultimately joined LA Galaxy.
"Saudi Arabia was also an option, but in the end we opted for a better life and the opportunity to continue building a business here, make new contacts and broaden our own horizons once again," Reus said on the TOMorrow Business, Stars & Lifestyle podcast (via Kicker).
"I'm still earning good money here, but if we're talking about Saudi Arabia, it probably would have been ten times as much. But I've never been a person who put money first, I've always made sure that I feel comfortable with my family."
Reus, who made 429 appearances for Borussia Dortmund and left as the club's second highest goalscorer of all time, also reflected on his exit after 12 years at the club. "I had time to process everything. I had expected it to be a lot harder. But that's probably because it was foreseeable that it was coming to an end."
Marco Reus has made five appearances so far for LA Galaxy in the MLS and has one goal and two assists to his name. He is currently on the road to recovery from a hamstring injury and will hope to return in time for the MLS playoffs.
