Borussia Dortmund head coach Niko Kovac backs underfire striker Serhou Guirassy to find his form again. The Guinean international has gone off the boil following a strong start to the 2025-26 campaign, failing to score a goal in his last seven consecutive Bundesliga appearances.
He remains the top-scorer in the Dortmund squad with nine goals in all competitions, though most of those strikes came in their initial games of the season as Guirassy began the new term all guns blazing.
Now, the 29-year-old has run out of steam, so much so that his seven-game drought marks his worst spell in front of goal in his Bundesliga career. Moreover, last weekend against Frankfurt, he also gave away a penalty that allowed the Eagles to equalize as Can Uzun unmistakably dispatched the spot-kick.
Yet, Kovac is backing the out-of-form player to be back among the goals again soon. Ahead of their Bundesliga game to Werder Bremen, the Croatian said:
"It's obvious that I value him highly, support him, and protect him. That's also my job as a coach. I know what he's capable of. But I also know that he wants to achieve more.said Kovac
He's our best striker. He always gives his all, always tries his best. Of course, we're missing five, six, seven goals at the moment."
Doubling on Guirassy's importance to the Dortmund squad, Kovac added:
"But these slumps happen. We'll get through this together. It's important to keep building the lad up. He'll be very important in the future."said the Croatian manager
Signed from VfB Stuttgart in June 2024 for a reported fee of €18 million, Guirassy had a terrific debut campaign for Dortmund, netting 38 goals in all competitions from 50 games, including 21 in the Bundesliga, winning him the domestic Golden Boot.
Among his best performances was a stunning Champions League hat-trick against Barcelona in the quarter-finals, though Dortmund lost out on aggregate.
At the start of the 2025-26 season, it seemed like Guirassy is continuing from where he left off, netting in their first four clashes in all competitions before slowly dipping off. His last top-flight goal was against Augsburg on 1 November 2025, netting the only goal of a 1-0 victory.
The striker then netted twice against Villarreal in the Champions League a few weeks later as it seemed like he's getting back in form again, but has slumped once again since then.
