Borussia Dortmund have completed the signing of Ian Maatsen from Chelsea, with the left-back joining on loan until the end of the season.

Ian Maatsen becomes Borussia Dortmund's first signing of the January transfer window, and bolsters the squad in the position that was the club's top priority. The 21 year old joins the Black and Yellows on loan until the end of the season. He has also extended his contract with Chelsea, and it contains a release clause which BVB could potentially activate in the summer if they decide to sign him permanently.

Sebastian Kehl said that Borussia Dortmund's personnel situation prompted them to sign a new left-back this month. "Due to our current personnel situation, we decided to sign a new left-back. Ian [Maatsen] is a player who has a lot of pace, a strong left foot and can also play in various positions. We are very pleased that we were able to finalize this loan signing before our first Bundesliga match of the year."

With Ramy Bensebaini away on international duty with Algeria and Julian Ryerson sidelined due to injury, the hope will be that Maatsen can slot into the team at left-back seamlessly. He could make his Borussia Dortmund debut this weekend as Borussia Dortmund go up against SV Darmstadt 98 in the Bundesliga.

Maatsen enjoyed an excellent loan spell with Burnley in the second division of English football last season. But he has found playing time hard to come by at Chelsea this season, and will hope to make an impact on the big stage for Borussia Dortmund in the coming months.

Ian Maatsen is a versatile full-back who can slot into a variety of different roles. The Netherlands U-21s international showed his promising attacking output while at Burnley last season, and could add a new dimension to the BVB attack that has been missing since the departure of Raphael Guerreiro.
